Moving In? Here’s What You’ll Want to Clean First

If you’re moving into a new home, cleaning will be at the top of your to-do list. While many sellers do their best to organize and clean their home when they move in, the reality is that during the chaos, some things get missed or time is cut short. Before you settle in, here’s a list of things you might want to clean!

Moving In? Here’s What You’ll Want to Clean First!

The Bathroom

No matter how shiny it is, the first thing you need to do is give your bathroom a good clean. Even if it’s already spotless, things do show up in bathrooms. Think of all those times you forgot to flush the toilet or thought no one would notice that little toothpaste streak on the mirror!

Some things you might want to look for are dirt around the bathtub, mold around a window or vent, any stains on the mirror, and cracked tiles. In addition to giving surfaces like countertops, sinks, and shelves a good scrub, you’ll want to give your toilet and bathtub a good clean. Finally, be sure to check for any leftover bathroom supplies. While these may not seem like a big deal, they can start to smell bad or even grow mold.

The Kitchen

You might want to give your kitchen a good clean, too! Even if it’s spotless, you’ll want to check under all those appliances for anything that might be lurking.

In addition to cleaning your countertops, sink, and cabinets (inside and out), you’ll also want to focus on your appliances. Scrub your oven, stove, refrigerator, microwave, and dishwasher. Anywhere grease builds up is a breeding ground for germs.

The Living Spaces

Aside from the obvious rooms in the house (kitchen and bathroom), you’ll want to make sure your living spaces are clean, especially if you have kids or pets.

Many rooms in the house will be completely empty, or close to empty, making it a great time to clean. Before you put furniture away, throw rugs, or hang pictures, you’ll want to deep clean any floors or surfaces.

Bedrooms

For bedrooms, you may want to give some extra attention to areas that are usually overlooked. These include closet floors, areas where furniture is located, and more. This is also a good time to focus on window treatments. Whether they are fabric curtains or wooden blinds, this is a good time to give them a good cleaning.

Windows

Windows are another item to focus on. Depending on their exposure to sunlight, windows can get very dirty. You’ll want to clean all of the windows inside and outside your home. This also means taking out the ladder! Don’t forget window sills, frames, and tracks, too. If the weather is right, you may also want to remove the screens and give them a good cleaning.

The Light Fixtures and Ceiling Fans

Although many people don’t think about it when moving into a new home, fixtures and fans will be covered in dust and grease! Since they’re hung so high on the ceiling, it’s easy to go unnoticed.

These can be some of the dirtiest things in your home, so it’s important to clean them thoroughly. Use an all-purpose cleaner to spray down the fixtures and fans (taking care not to get any cleaner on the light bulbs), then use an old towel or rag to wipe everything down.

Vents

Things have a way of accumulating dust, so make sure to clean your vents thoroughly. Some of these vents may include heating and cooling vents. Depending on where they are in your home, you may want to use an air compressor, being careful not to damage the vent itself.

Carpeted Areas

While some carpeted areas may appear clean, the truth is often beneath the surface. For this reason, you’ll want to do a thorough cleaning so that there are no stains or odors on the surface.

Before you fill up or settle in a room, it may be worth hiring a steam cleaner and deep cleaning the carpets throughout the home. Focus on high-traffic areas like hallways and bedrooms. Be sure to check any carpeted stairs as well!

Before moving into a new home, it’s important to understand that “new” doesn’t always mean “clean.” While you can never be sure that every square inch of your home has been thoroughly cleaned, these are some of the most commonly overlooked areas. By taking a little extra time to thoroughly clean these areas, you’ll have a much more enjoyable transition.
